Tetra Pak^® Tubular Heat Exchangers

Tetra Pak^® tubular heat exchangers are used for the heat treatment of a broad range of food products: from low-viscosity liquids at high flow rates to highly viscous products with particles, fibres or pulp. By combining straight and corrugated tubes with short residence times, they protect product quality and keep product losses low.

The Tetra Pak^® Tubular Heat Exchanger C is a single-pass shell-and-tube design: the product flows through one or more straight inner tubes while the medium flows counter-current around them. Inner tubes, outer tubes and connections are not welded together but sealed with O-rings, so all parts can expand and contract freely. This Floating Protection System prevents cracks, lowers the risk of contamination and allows every tube module to be opened for inspection. Tube modules are 6 m long, which means fewer bends, and the units extend horizontally rather than being stacked, which makes maintenance easier.

• Applications: General heating and cooling, heat recovery, pasteurization and UHT treatment of food products with low to high viscosity, with or without particles, fibres or pulp, such as UHT milk, tomato purée, creamy soups, hummus and cream cheese.

• Capacity: 200 to 120,000 l/h, with high-pressure tubes for product pressures of up to 200 bar.

• Models: Tubular Heat Exchanger C with double-tube, multitube and concentric tube modules, regenerative versions for product-to-product heat recovery, compact Tubular Heat Exchanger S and SA in seven sizes, water heater and a pilot range for small-scale trials.

• Options: Patented spring box for fibrous products, patent-pending Q corrugation with 40% lower pressure drop, protective panels and insulation, 3-A and EHEDG certification on selected modules.

Energy savings: Protective panels alone save up to 6% energy, or up to 11% with added insulation. In an example calculated by Tetra Pak^® for UHT milk at 15,000 l/h, an insulated product-to-product unit loses 67% less heat than a conventional product-to-water design and saves 53 kg of steam per hour.
